The Gallows is a 111-kilometer gravel race held in the Langeberg region of the Western Cape, starting from Lord's Wines outside McGregor. The route consists of roughly 93% gravel surfaces alongside connecting segments of tarmac, vineyards, river crossings, and singletrack sections. The course features approximately 2,200 meters of elevation gain and finishes at the summit of Galgeberg mountain at the Heavens View Mountain Venue.

The race rolls out from Lord's Wines at 8:00 am with an initial descent toward McGregor before entering a 2-kilometer singletrack section named The Hosepipe at kilometer 9. From there, the circuit loops through gravel roads and vineyard tracks toward Bonnievale before heading back toward McGregor. The final sector of the route returns to Lord's Wines and ascends the steep road up Galgeberg to the summit finish line.

The event is sanctioned by Cycling South Africa (CSA), requiring all competitors to present a valid CSA license during registration. Two aid stations are located on course at approximately 79 kilometers and 100 kilometers (Lord's Wines), stocked with carb fluid, gels, water, Coca-Cola, and food. A strict intermediate cut-off time applies at Lord's Wines at 2:00 pm, with the final course cut-off set for 5:00 pm. Electric bicycles and outside assistance are prohibited.

Riders are required to race with a charged mobile phone, functioning front and rear lights, a basic repair kit, and at least 1 liter of hydration capacity. Route timing is tracked manually without timing chips. Following the finish at Heavens View, participants collect their warm clothing and ride back down to Lord's Wines.
