The Stanford 100 Miler – Stanford, South Africa
- Date: 5 December 2026
- Location: Stanford, Western Cape, South Africa
- Distances: 169 km, 77 km
- Event Type: One-day race
The Stanford 100 Miler is a one-day gravel race South Africa lays claim to in the heart of the Overstrand. Now in its fifth year, the event has established a reputation for its handcrafted feel, born from a genuine commitment to creating lasting memories for riders and adding value to the town that hosts it. It is a day for finding rhythm over rolling terrain, a true test set against the backdrop of the Western Cape's quiet landscapes.
Set in and around the beautiful town of Stanford, the routes explore a region known for its natural charm. The course winds through a landscape that connects to other notable towns like Gansbaai, Hermanus, and Pearly Beach, reaching toward L'Agulhas, the southernmost tip of Africa. The character of the area provides a rich canvas for this ride and for other gravel events in South Africa, offering a unique sense of place and atmosphere.
Two distinct distances are offered to riders. The signature 100-miler is a formidable 169-kilometre journey with 2,360 meters of climbing, featuring 80% gravel roads. For those seeking a shorter but equally challenging day, the 50-miler covers 77 kilometres with 1,365 meters of ascent, with its route made up of 90% gravel. Both options in this South African gravel race promise a day of focused effort and rewarding views.
The course itself is designed to favour the rouleur — the strong, steady rider who can manage their effort over the long haul. After a brief neutral roll-out from Stanford, the route heads south onto what the organisers describe as some of the finest gravel roads in the country. The surface is predominantly clay hardpack, providing a fast but demanding foundation as you zig-zag through the Overstrand. A few clever twists and turns near the end require a tactical mind and some energy left in reserve.
The spirit of the event, nicknamed "The Hunt," is one of personal challenge and shared experience. It’s a day to push your limits on the bike, supported by well-placed water points and the reassurance of medical backup. This approach, crafted by the same team behind the Tanqua Kuru Bicycle Race, ensures a focus on the ride itself. The day culminates with a warm welcome at the village pub, a place to share stories and celebrate the accomplishment.
Logistics are centered around the community, with registration taking place at the Stanford Hills Estate. This creates a focal point for the weekend, allowing riders to gather and soak in the pre-race atmosphere. It is an event built from the ground up, with a personal touch that sets it apart.
