Question 1

When is the best time of year to ride gravel in South Africa?

Accepted Answer

The peak seasons for gravel cycling in South Africa are autumn, from March to May, and spring, from September to November. During these months, temperatures are generally mild across most provinces, avoiding the intense heat of the mid-summer months and the wet conditions found in parts of the Western Cape during winter. Riders should always be prepared for rapid weather changes in mountainous regions regardless of the season.

Question 2

What kind of terrain can cyclists expect when riding in South Africa?

Accepted Answer

South Africa offers diverse terrain ranging from the rugged Karoo desert with its vast open landscapes to the steep, fynbos-covered climbs of the Cape Fold Mountains. The Garden Route provides lush forest tracks, while the high-altitude plateau of the Free State features rolling agricultural roads. Visiting riders should expect a mix of smooth limestone surfaces and rough, corrugated tracks that require wider tires for comfort.

Question 3

Are there any well-known gravel races or events in South Africa?

Accepted Answer

One of the most prominent gravel events in the country is Around the Pot, which takes place in the Overberg region based out of Swellendam. Other notable races include the Prince George 100-Miler, which traverses the iconic Swartberg Pass, and various stages of the Karoo Burn. These events are known for their challenging elevation gains and remote, scenic routes through rural farm landscapes.

Question 4

What should international riders know about logistics and bike rentals in South Africa?

Accepted Answer

International visitors often find it easiest to fly into Cape Town or Johannesburg and arrange for a dedicated bike transfer service if traveling to remote race starts. While high-end bike rentals are available in major cities, many riders prefer to bring their own gravel bikes due to the specific setup required for long-distance events. It is essential to carry adequate tubeless repair kits and extra hydration, as distances between water points can be significant.

Question 5

How can I find a full list of South African gravel events?

Accepted Answer

You can find a comprehensive regional list of races, distance challenges, and bikepacking events by browsing the South Africa section on Gravelevents.com. The directory allows you to filter by date and province to help you plan your travel itinerary. Check the site regularly for updates as new organizers submit their events to the national calendar throughout the year.
