The Grizzly offers a classic gravel ride in California, set against the backdrop of the Sierra National Forest. Taking place in early October, the event invites riders to experience the quiet beauty of the season on routes that climb through tranquil forests and past granite domes. It’s a day for finding a rhythm on long, steady ascents and taking in the expansive views that define this part of the state. The event is a fundraiser for the Sierra Vista Scenic Byway Association, with all profits supporting their work.

Two distinct gravel routes are available for exploration. The longer 64-mile journey and a more concise 40-mile option both ascend Central Camp Road, following gentle railroad-grade fire roads. The climb is rewarded with a descent on a seldom-seen dirt portion of the Scenic Byway. This carefully curated gravel ride in California has been recognized for its quality, offering a peaceful yet challenging day on the bike. The landscape is one of meadows, granite outcrops, and the deep shade of the forest canopy, creating a truly memorable atmosphere for all participants.

For those who prefer pavement, the event also includes three road options. A classic 100-mile century ride presents a significant challenge, while a 68-mile metric century offers a balanced test of endurance. A shorter 25-mile loop around Bass Lake provides a more relaxed way to enjoy the scenery. Road riders are treated to views of Redinger and Mammoth Pool lakes, Eagle Beak Peak, and the rolling expanse of Beasore Meadow, showcasing the grandeur of the Sierra Nevada from a unique perspective.

The day begins and ends at the North Fork Town Hall. Check-in is available the evening before or on the morning of the ride. A pre-ride breakfast is provided, allowing for a calm start to the day. Start times are staggered by distance, beginning from 7:00 AM. Well-stocked rest stops and SAG support are available on all routes, ensuring riders are cared for. The region is home to many other other gravel events in the United States, but The Grizzly holds a special place in the local community.

The post-ride experience is a core part of the event. Upon returning to Town Hall, riders check in to receive meal and beer tickets, a system that helps ensure everyone is accounted for. A complimentary meal and beer await, providing a chance to relax and share stories from the road and trail.
