The Octopus Gravel event offers a unique approach to a gravel event in Switzerland, centred in the alpine town of Andermatt. The format is distinctive: a central event area serves as the starting point for eight different dead-end gravel climbs, like the arms of an octopus. Riders can choose how many of these ‘arms’ to tackle, returning to the festival atmosphere of the main village area to rest, eat, and connect with other riders before heading out for the next challenge.

Riders have the freedom to decide their own challenge. The full route, encompassing all eight climbs, covers a demanding 155 kilometres with 4450 metres of vertical ascent. However, the structure allows each participant to tailor their day, whether that means tackling three climbs or attempting all eight. At the summit of each climb, a stamp is earned, and food and water stops are available. This flexible format makes the day as challenging or as relaxed as one chooses.

While the overall event is self-paced, it also includes a competitive element for those who want it. Three of the climbs, ranging from four to six kilometres, are timed segments with separate categories for men and women. This adds a layer of friendly racing within the broader, more social day. The terrain is a mix of smooth gravel fire roads, sections of rough tarmac, and some easy singletrack, making it accessible to most riders with suitable bikes, like a gravel bike with 45-50mm tyres or a cross-country mountain bike.

The weekend is designed as a festival celebrating mountain and gravel culture. The event kicks off on Friday with bib collection, a gravel talk, and a cycling movie night. The main ride is on Saturday, followed by an awards ceremony and after-party. On Sunday, optional, more relaxed "hang-over" rides are offered, allowing participants to soak in more of the stunning local scenery.
