Gravel Tro Breizh – Lac de Trémelin, Brittany, France

  • Date: 8-15 May 2027
  • Location: Lac de Trémelin, Brittany, France
  • Distances: 1300 km
  • Event Type: Ultra-distance, Self-supported

The Gravel Tro Breizh is Brittany’s pioneering off-road adventure, a landmark event for ultra cycling Brittany France. Since its inception in 2018, it has invited riders to journey through the region's most secret and wild landscapes. The event is a deep immersion into a land of granite and timeless tales. For its tenth anniversary edition, the journey continues, staying true to its roots of pure self-reliance, physical challenge, and an undeniable human experience found on the trail.

The route itself is a legend, redrawn each year to ensure the mystery and challenge remain. Spanning approximately 1,300 kilometres with around 20,000 metres of elevation gain, the track is a formidable undertaking. It winds through hidden paths, ancient trails, and quiet roads, revealing the raw character of the Breton peninsula. To preserve the spirit of discovery, the final GPS route is revealed to participants only one week before the start, ensuring a true test of adaptability.

This is a non-competitive event, but the challenge is defined by a strict time limit of 180 hours, or seven and a half days. To complete the course within this window, riders must maintain an impressive daily average of around 165 kilometres. Such a feat requires not only excellent physical conditioning but also robust mental fortitude. This is more than a ride; it is a significant test of endurance and pacing, demanding long, consistent days in the saddle for those experienced in ultra cycling.

Success on the Gravel Tro Breizh is intrinsically linked to preparation, and bike choice is a crucial decision. While gravel, monstercross, and mountain bikes are all suitable, the organisers caution against narrow tyres. The route is not confined to smooth gravel roads, featuring more technical sections where wider clearances become a significant advantage. The spirit is one of bikepacking minimalism—carrying only the essentials to remain light and agile over long distances, fully embracing the ethos of self-sufficiency.

The route is meticulously balanced, offering a rhythm that reflects Brittany's unique geography. Riders will experience fast-rolling sections that give way to tougher, hillier segments, particularly inland. The terrain may offer a gentler profile elsewhere, but the heart of Brittany reveals short, steep climbs. This thoughtful design provides a complete immersion in the Breton landscape and is why there are so few other gravel events in France that can rival it for route quality.

At the core of the Gravel Tro Breizh is one golden rule: absolute self-sufficiency. This is an unsupported event in the purest sense. All outside assistance is forbidden, whether from friends, family, or pre-arranged support between riders. Each participant must be autonomous in handling lodging, food, resupply, and any mechanical issues. It is a philosophy that places the rider alone against the route and the elements, creating the conditions where true legends of ultra cycling are forged.

The journey begins and ends at the peaceful Lac de Trémelin, a green haven that serves as the perfect backdrop for pre-ride focus and post-ride reflection. Completing this adventure is to write a personal chapter in the event’s growing legend, a profound accomplishment unique to the spirit of ultra cycling in Brittany, France.
