Why Ride Gravel in the United States?
The sheer scale and variety of the American landscape make it a world-class destination for gravel riding. Where else can you tackle the tyre-shredding flint of Kansas, the deep red mud of Oklahoma, the high-altitude passes of the Rocky Mountains, and the sun-baked deserts of Arizona — all within the same season? The US gravel scene is defined by its strong sense of community, grassroots spirit, and a collection of marquee events that have become global phenomena.
The Terrain: From Flint Hills to Tushar Mountains
The word "gravel" in the US covers a dizzying array of surfaces.
The Midwest: The infamous sharp rocks of the Flint Hills in Kansas are the defining feature of the legendary Unbound Gravel. Further north in Michigan, sand and dirt roads can turn to thick mud in spring at Barry-Roubaix.
The Rocky Mountains: Events like SBT GRVL in Colorado and the Crusher in the Tushar in Utah take you to breathtaking heights on a mix of smooth dirt roads and punishing climbs. Altitude is the defining challenge.
The Southwest: The distinctive red dirt of Oklahoma at The Mid South, and the rugged desert terrain of Arizona and California offer a completely different riding experience.
The South & Arkansas: Bentonville, Arkansas has emerged as a true cycling mecca. The rocky, undulating roads of the Ozark Mountains power events like Big Sugar Gravel and Gravel Fest.
Climate & Seasonality
Winter/Early Spring (Jan–Mar): The season kicks off in California and Arizona. Rock Cobbler in February is a classic West Coast opener.
Spring (Apr–May): Classic season in the Midwest and on the East Coast. Unpredictable weather defines events like Barry-Roubaix. The most packed part of the calendar.
Summer (Jun–Aug): High country season. Colorado, Utah, Idaho and Montana host epic mountain races. Unbound Gravel in early June is the season's centrepiece.
Autumn (Sep–Oct): Temperatures cool and the calendar heats up again. Stunning autumn colours in Arkansas and Vermont provide a beautiful backdrop for season-ending events.
Remaining 2026 Event Highlights
Several of the year's biggest races are still ahead. Here are the standouts:
Unbound Gravel (Emporia, Kansas — 30 May 2026)
The Super Bowl of gravel. 200 miles across the sharp, unforgiving Flint Hills. The race that put American gravel on the world map. If you have an entry, this is the most important date in your 2026 calendar.
SBT GRVL (Steamboat Springs, Colorado — 26 June 2026)
Speed and scenery. Held on the beautiful champagne gravel of Steamboat Springs, SBT GRVL is known for fast-paced group racing against a stunning Rocky Mountain backdrop. One of the most prestigious events on the 2026 calendar.
Crusher in the Tushar (Beaver, Utah — 11 July 2026)
A unique format — roughly 60% gravel and 40% tarmac — culminating in a brutal climb to 10,000 feet in Utah's Tushar Mountains. The definitive test for climbing specialists.
Rebecca's Private Idaho (Sun Valley, Idaho — 9 September 2026)
A beloved late-summer event in the mountains of central Idaho. Known for its community atmosphere, stunning scenery and challenging terrain. A perfect early-autumn bucket list event.
Gravel Worlds (Lincoln, Nebraska — 19 August 2026)
One of the Midwest's premier gravel festivals. Held on the rolling gravel roads outside Lincoln, Gravel Worlds combines competitive racing with a relaxed, inclusive festival atmosphere.
Big Sugar Gravel (Bentonville, Arkansas — 17 October 2026)
The perfect season closer. The rugged, rocky terrain of the Ozark Mountains makes this a tougher challenge than the mileage suggests. Held in Bentonville, America's cycling mecca.
Alaska Divide (Anchorage, Alaska — 16 August 2026)
For those seeking true wilderness adventure. A self-supported bikepacking race through some of the most remote terrain in North America. Utterly unique.
Looking Ahead: 2027 Highlights
Registration for major 2027 events will open in late 2026. Get these on your radar now:
The Mid South (Stillwater, Oklahoma — 12 March 2027): The season opener. Red dirt, potential mud and heartland gravel culture at its finest.
Barry-Roubaix (Hastings, Michigan — 17 April 2027): A true spring classic. Punchy climbs, unpredictable weather and miles of rolling gravel.
Belgian Waffle Ride California (San Marcos — 2 May 2027): Multi-surface madness blending technical gravel with tarmac in North County San Diego.
Unbound Gravel (Emporia, Kansas — Late May/Early June 2027): The lottery opens in late 2026. Don't miss it.
