The United States offers a bikepacking canvas of continental scale, and the 2026 season is shaping up to be a landmark year for adventure. From sun-scorched deserts to dense forests and epic mountain ranges, the sheer variety of multi-day, self-supported events is staggering.

The American bikepacking scene is defined by its scale and diversity, offering everything from entry-level guided trips to thousand-mile unsupported epics.

The Terrain

The Southwest: Iconic desert landscapes of Arizona and Utah. Events like Ride Across Arizona cover 620 miles of gravel highways, while Pinyons and Pines explores the high-altitude forests around Flagstaff.

The Appalachians: Rolling hills and dense woods of Virginia and Pennsylvania. Trans Virginia Spring covers 565 miles of remote unpaved backcountry from Washington D.C. to Damascus.

The Midwest: Endless gravel farm roads through Nebraska, Oklahoma, and Kansas. Flat, relentless, and deceptively challenging.

The Far North: Nothing compares to Alaska. The Alaska Divide is a 1,700km unsupported journey through the Last Frontier — one of the world's most remote bikepacking routes.

Climate & Seasonality

Southwest (Arizona, Utah, Southern California): Spring (March–May) and Autumn (September–November) are prime times. Avoid summer heat.

Midwest (Oklahoma, Nebraska, Kansas): Spring and Autumn are best. Summers are hot and humid with a risk of severe weather.

East Coast & Appalachians: Spring and Autumn offer glorious colours and mild temperatures. Summers can be hot and buggy at lower elevations.

Rocky Mountains & Pacific Northwest: High-elevation routes are typically only clear from July to September. Plan accordingly.

Alaska: The window is very narrow — typically June to August.

Looking Ahead: 2027 Highlights

Registration for 2027 events will open in late 2026. These are the ones to watch:

Ride Across Arizona (Topock — 4 May 2027): 620 miles of self-supported riding across the stunning Arizona desert. Registration fills fast — follow their channels closely.

Crush the Commonwealth (Pittsburgh — 23 April 2027): An unsupported adventure crossing the entire state of Pennsylvania. Start and finish lines alternate between Pittsburgh and Philadelphia each year.

The Mid South (Stillwater, Oklahoma — 12 March 2027): The season opener. Red dirt, potential mud, and heartland American gravel culture at its finest.
