The Wheelbase Fred Whitton Challenge – Lake District, United Kingdom

  • Date: 9 May 2027

The Wheelbase Fred Whitton Challenge is a long-distance cycling sportive held in the Lake District, established in 1999 in memory of Fred Whitton, an active member of the Lakes Road Club. Covering a single 112-mile route, the ride takes participants over major mountain passes in the region, including Kirkstone Pass, Honister Pass, Hardknott Pass, and Wrynose Pass.

Entry is managed via a registration system that includes a general public ballot alongside pre-ballot allocations for special charity places, deferred riders, and event volunteers. In addition to the main one-day event, organizers offer the Macmillan Four Seasons Fred Whitton Challenge, allowing riders to complete the 112-mile course independently over one or more days.

The event serves as a major charity fundraiser, supporting organizations including Macmillan Cancer Support, the North West Air Ambulance, the Great North Air Ambulance, and Duddon & Furness Mountain Rescue. More than 350 volunteers support the operation on the day, with all volunteers receiving guaranteed entry into the subsequent edition. Full route GPX files, training materials, and entry details can be found on the official event website.
