Basajaun is a self-supported, single-stage bikepacking adventure of 890 kilometers and over 15,000 meters of climbing. Starting from Vitoria-Gasteiz, the event is described by the organizers as the "northern twin" to their Badlands event, intended to be "wilder, higher, and every bit as raw." The route is approximately 70% off-road.

The fixed course takes riders from the forests of Urbasa and Irati into the semi-desert plains of Bardenas Reales. It then returns towards the Ebro river before tackling the Sierra de la Demanda, a mountain range with a continental climate, reaching over 2,200 meters near Pico San Lorenzo. The final section leads back through the forests of Izki Natural Park to the finish in Vitoria-Gasteiz.

This is a non-stop event, meaning the clock starts at the beginning and only stops at the finish line. Any time spent resting, eating, or sleeping is included in the total time. While there is a final classification based on arrival order, the event is presented as a personal challenge, not a race, with no prizes for top finishers. Riders are expected to be self-sufficient; it is forbidden to book any services like accommodation before the event starts. External support from family or friends is only permitted at the start and finish lines.
