Why Ride Gravel in Colorado?

Colorado isn't just a place to ride — it's an experience. The state's diverse geography offers an unparalleled variety of gravel, from the smooth, fast champagne gravel of the western slope to the chunky, challenging mining roads of the San Juan Mountains. Add in the craft beer culture, vibrant cycling communities, and the physical challenge of riding at altitude, and you have one of the world's finest gravel destinations.

The Terrain

High-Desert Mesas: The western slope near Fruita offers dry, dusty, and technical terrain with punchy climbs and fast descents. A mix of crushed rock and hard-packed dirt surrounded by stark desert beauty.

Alpine & Sub-Alpine: Classic Colorado. Events like the Telluride Gravel Race and SBT GRVL in Steamboat Springs take you high into the mountains. Long, sustained climbs on well-maintained forest service roads, breathtaking views, and the ever-present challenge of altitude.

Rolling Plains & Ranchlands: Wide-open-range riding around Kremmling and the eastern plains. Rolling hills that are deceptively tough, especially with the persistent Colorado wind.

Climate & Seasonality

Spring (April–May): Best spent at lower elevations on the Front Range and Western Slope. The high country is still thawing. Be prepared for anything from warm sun to spring snow.

Summer (June–August): Peak season in the high country. SBT GRVL and FoCo Fondo take advantage of long days and stable weather. Afternoon thunderstorms are common — start early.

Autumn (September–October): Arguably the most beautiful time to ride in Colorado. Golden aspens, crisp air, and often perfect weather. Snow can fall in the high country as early as September.
