MoliseTrail – Petacciato, Italy

  • Date: October 30–November 3, 2026

  • Location: Petacciato, Italy

  • Distances: ~80 km, ~200 km, ~300 km, ~400 km

  • Event Type: Bikepacking

MoliseTrail is a multi-day bikepacking event exploring the "tratturi" — ancient grassy transhumance routes — of the Molise region of Italy. The event is explicitly not a race; there is no timing or ranking, and the focus is on self-paced riding through the landscape.

Three main route options are available: Il Corto (~200 km / 4,500 m of climbing), Il Medio (~300 km / 6,000 m), and Il Lungo (~400 km / 8,000 m). The routes are designed to pass through historical and cultural sites, including ancient theaters and villages. Riders follow GPX tracks and can switch between routes at intersections, as long as they return to the finish by November 3rd.

There is also a one-day route on November 1, Il Cortissimo, covering approximately 80 km with 1,400 meters of climbing and starting from the same event base in Petacciato. Registration for Il Cortissimo is open on the official event website.

The routes follow the tratturi, which are described as wide, grassy paths, some up to 111 meters across, that are part of a network recognized as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage. The surface is a mix of these grassy tracks, dirt, and "strade bianche" (white gravel roads).

The event starts and finishes at the event village in Petacciato, which opens on October 29. Riders can get access to four base camps ("riposi") along the routes, located in Sant'Elia a Pianisi, Pietracatella, Frosolone, and Torella del Sannio. These stops are organized by the local communities and are available through an optional logistics service that can be purchased during registration.

Registration provides riders with the GPX track, komoot Premium access for navigation, a paper map, an event guide, a package of local products, photos, insurance, and use of facilities at the village. More details and registration information are available on the official event website.
