Road to Desolation Gravel is a signature one-day gravel race through the haunting beauty of South Africa’s Karoo semi-desert, originating in the historic town of Graaff‑Reinet near the iconic Valley of Desolation. Set within Camdeboo National Park, this event offers two route options—179 km for seasoned gravel riders, and a 66 km alternative for those seeking a shorter yet still challenging ride.
The longer “Desolation” course features approximately 85% unpaved terrain, ranging from fast-packed gravel to loose, rocky sections—and several river crossings that can reach ankle depth. Riders face more than 2,700 m of climbing, with the most difficult ascents concentrated in the first third of the route and a steep paved climb into the Valley of Desolation to finish. The shorter “Taste of Desolation” offers over 50% gravel terrain and culminates in the same dramatic panoramic climb.
As part of the Gravel Earth Series, Road to Desolation combines the raw ruggedness of Karoo landscapes with the global appeal of gravel racing. Elite riders compete for prizes and series points, while all participants share the experience of racing in this iconic, remote environment.
Support during the event includes well‑stocked feed zones, local food options at finish, and a race culture rooted in respect for the land and hosting communities. Riders must hold a CSA license and adhere to race rules, but race-day logistics—navigation, pacing, and self‑support between aid stations—are left to individual grit and strategy.
Road to Desolation Gravel isn’t simply a test of endurance—it’s a ride into the soul of the Karoo, where vast skies meet deep challenge and every pedal stroke resonates with landscape and legend.
