The Grefillinn Gravel Race is a world-class gravel cycling event set in the rugged, breathtaking landscapes of West Iceland. Starting and finishing in Reykholt, this race offers riders an unforgettable journey through remote highlands, volcanic terrain, and wide gravel roads framed by dramatic Icelandic scenery.
Organized by the cycling division of the Breiðablik sports club, Grefillinn is designed for cyclists who want a pure, challenging, and beautifully wild gravel experience. The event offers three route options to suit different levels of skill and ambition:
-
200 km route – A serious ultra-distance ride with about 1,820 meters of elevation, ideal for experienced endurance riders
-
100 km route – A mid-distance challenge with 780 meters of climbing, mixing speed and scenery
-
45 km route – A compact loop with 280 meters of elevation, perfect for newer gravel riders or a fast ride in a stunning setting
Each route takes riders across a variety of surfaces, including flowing gravel roads, river crossings, and rugged open plains. The race is named “Grefillinn” — an old Icelandic word meaning “pickaxe” — reflecting the toughness of the terrain and the grit required to finish it.
After the race, participants can recover like locals in natural geothermal baths, enjoy Icelandic hospitality, and soak in the quiet of one of Europe’s most awe-inspiring regions.
Ride where fire meets ice. Ride Grefillinn.
