Gempen Grinder

    Gempen Gravel Grinder

The Gempen Grinder is Europe’s best-kept gravel secret—an underground favorite with global potential. Set in the tri-border region where Switzerland, France, and Germany meet, this self-supported gravel race blends raw terrain, community spirit, and festival vibes into one unforgettable experience.

The race unfolds across a carefully crafted 50 km loop that riders complete once, twice, or three times depending on their chosen category. The terrain is 85% gravel and fully immersive—ranging from smooth flowy paths to challenging double track sections that cut through thick woods, rolling hills, and open countryside. There are views of the Alps, the Vosges, and even the Black Forest, weather permitting, of course. There’s nothing else quite like it in the heart of Europe.

For those craving a twist, the event also features an innovative Gravel Track Cycling competition—a separate high-energy format that borrows its mindset from velodrome racing but takes place entirely on gravel. Short, fast, and intensely tactical, it’s a crowd favorite and a perfect complement to the endurance side of the event.

Start and finish are based at the Schänzli Hippodrome, a unique all-in-one venue located just outside Basel. It offers camping, quick airport and train access, and a full-scale after-party with live music, BBQ, and local beverages. The atmosphere blends urban accessibility with the raw edge of nature—making it easy for riders, friends, and families to stay for the entire day (or weekend).

Gempen Grinder is more than a race—it’s a movement built on community, inclusivity, and the shared love of gravel. Come for the ride, stay for the festival, and discover why this event is quickly becoming a must-do on the European gravel calendar.
